Kitchen remodeling is one of the most common home improvements on the planet. It is one of the most crucial improvements that you can add to your home, which can be quite costly. But with the right DIY remodeling ideas, you can improve your cooking space without spending a lot of money. So whether you have just purchased the house or you have lived in it for several years, there are some affordable DIY remodeling ideas that you can incorporate in your kitchen.

Replace Your Pantry Doors With New Cabinetry Array

One of the most straightforward DIY projects that can improve your kitchen is replacing your cupboard or cabinets doors with  new handles and hardware. This is one DIY project that will make an impact.  You can also improve your storage by adding some open shelves. This project involves some basic woodworking skills, but can create a new look and a place to showcase favorite pieces or even plants.

Create Beautiful and Unique Wood Pieces

You can build beautiful hand-made stools or stands for your space. You can even create a unique floor!  You’ll need wood, of course. If you’re lucky enough to have this on your own land, great! If not, source out logs in the diameter you’d like. Since you will be cutting the logs into sizes for your unique project, a chainsaw will be a great addition to your workshop.

Large diameter ‘stumps’ can be cute to height and topped with a foam cushion covered in your choice of fabric.  They also make great plant stands for larger plants, or even a tabletop surface.  For a small section of floor you can even cut smaller diameter logs into discs of equal height, glue them to the subfloor,  fill the spaces between the wood discs with a mixture of grout solution and sawdust. Once the floor has dried, you can apply three coats of polyurethane for a smooth finish. (You’ll want to do a bit of research on this process to get the durable results you desire)

Make the Grout Sparkle

Have a tile backsplash or floor in your home? One of the best ways to improve a kitchen is by cleaning the tile grout and brightening them using the grout paint. Cleaning the lines between your tiles can brighten your kitchen. After cleaning then, you can apply some grout paint on them using a toothbrush. Remember to wipe the excess paint that might get on the tiles.

Granite Counter Paint

The most affordable way to give any smooth countertop surface a granite look is by painting it with specialized granite paints. With this paint, brushes, sponges, and rollers, you can give your countertop granite look at a very small price. To achieve the look you’re going for you’ll want to practice first. Buy enough supplies to do a couple of trial sections on scrap wood.

Install Glass-Faced Cabinets

For this job, you will require pre-cut glass, glass clips, caulk, sandpaper, and a drill. You can start from scratch by building the cabinet doors for the pre-cut glass or you may find that the center portion of some of your existing cabinet door can be cut out and modified to accomodate glass.  This look can be a major game changer in your space.  If you already do some basic woodworking you can probably tackle this project on your own.  If not, find a friend with the needed skills, or perhaps hire and experienced handyman to help out with at least some of the project.

Penny Countertop

Another affordable remodeling project you can do is replacing the existing countertop with a penny countertop. Start the project by removing the existing countertop material if necessary. You’ll want to start with a dark or black surface.  You may be able to paint your current outdated or damaged top, ask a paint pro. If not, you’ll need to start with a wood surface. Get help if you need it! You can then arrange coins on the countertop before finally adding a thick epoxy layer. Make sure the epoxy layer is thick enough for the pennies not to poke through.  You’ll need to do a bit of research on epoxy coatings for this project to be successfully completed and durable enough for kitchen use.

Add Glass Window Shelves

You can create more storage space by adding glass window shelves in your home. These shelves are made of glass, and they are often placed in front of the window. But make sure the glass shelves don’t obstruct the natural light from the window. It’s a great place to grow small plants and it can replace the need for light blocking window coverings if spaced properly.

Under-Cabinet Lighting

Under-cabinet lighting can really transform a dull kitchen into a lively cooking space. In fact, with all the inexpensive under-cabinet lights on the market, this remodeling idea can be very simple and affordable. You can find do it yourself lighting strips that are easy for a novice to install, or if you really want an upgrade call in that professional electrician for this project.

Update Your Old Kitchen’s Drawers

You can update the inside of your drawers by fitting a wooden insert instead of the plastic ones you probably use now. The wooden insert lasts longer than the plastic one. With only a sander, caulk, and a saw, you can cut some pieces of wood to the right size and build some segments in the drawers. This update can be a great and beautiful upgrade for your drawers and help you get more organized too!

Update the Kitchen Sink

One of the most obvious ways of remodeling the kitchen is by replacing your old sink with a new one at an affordable price.  The process of installing kitchen sinks varies according to style, design, and manufacturer, but it is not as difficult as one might imagine.  And sinks come in so many shapes, colors and sizes! You’ll be surprised at the difference it can make.

Brighten up Your Kitchen’s Lighting

Other than repainting the walls and ceiling, installing new lighting is one of the best ways to brighten any room. Great lighting can make your kitchen less cavernous, cheerful, and brighter. Replacing the small ceiling-mounted lights with brighter or bigger fixtures can make your kitchen more luxurious. Not sure where to go with your lighting project?  Take photos of your space and head to your nearest lighting store to get advice from pros and see what is new in lighting.

Chalkboard Wall

One of the best ways to relay messages to your family members and track the grocery list is by creating a chalkboard wall in your kitchen. You can “build” a cheap chalkboard applying chalkboard paint on your kitchen wall. You can even mount a shelf near the chalkboard for storing your chalks. You can now find chalkboard paint in a multitude of colors other than black!

Install Countertops

Countertops can be affordable, and they can give your kitchen a brand new look. Take careful measurements. This is the most important step. You can order precut countertop material, or to keep costs really low, you can cut the new surface to your counter’s specifications, and within a single day, you will have a beautiful kitchen at a low price. This will take an intermediate level of skill, so if you need a professional’s help, seek it out!

Build a Pecan Dining Table

The dining table is one of the most crucial furniture in all homes. It is where your family sits and enjoys their meals. So replacing your old dining table with a new pecan dining table can be a significant upgrade. With a small budget and a few simple steps, you can design and build a new pecan-wood dining table. The building process includes obtaining pecan wood for making the tabletop and a pair of X-beam supports. You’ll need to do a bit of research, and you’ll need to be handy with some tools (or know someone that is), but building your own table can be rewarding!  Don’t like pecan or cannot find it? Look for other unique wood species in your area.

Paint Your Kitchen Cabinet

With brushes, sponges, rollers, primer, enamel, and a sander, you can transform your dull kitchen cabinet. Repainting the cabinets is the simplest and most effective way to add value and beauty to your space.  Just make sure you can repaint the cabinets using a unique color that blends with your natural hardwood floor if your looking for a look that flows.

There are so many ways you can change the look of your kitchen without spending a lot of money or even time.  Let your imagination be your guide!
