What is the meaning of the “holidays”? Hmmm…. Here’s one dictionary’s definition of “holiday”:

1. A day free from work that one may spend at leisure, especially a day on which custom or the law dictates a halting of general business activity to commemorate or celebrate a particular event.

2. Chiefly British A vacation. Often used in the phrase on holiday.

Interesting. We all like a ‘day free from work’, right? A day to spend ‘at leisure’. How nice is that? We certainly can’t get too many days of leisure! Let’s see… What kind of leisure activities can I plan for my holiday? Reading, long walks, watching old movies on TV…. Those all sound kind of nice. It’s more likely that I’d spend the time cleaning out my junk drawer, trying to organize my garage or finding out what is really at the bottom of that hall closet. But it sure sounds nice.

I love the British phrase ‘on holiday’. Doesn’t that just make a day off sound so much better? I don’t just have the day off – oh it’s much more than that! I’m on holiday!
So much more fun! Here in America we have such a good time wishing everyone Happy Holidays! Why not take a hint from the British and call all of our time off ‘holiday’ time? Celebrate! (You’ll get some funny looks from co-workers but it’s all part of the fun!)

We at the Rochester Home Builders’ Association would like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday Season. It doesn’t matter what holiday you celebrate, or whether you celebrate any ‘official’ holiday at all. Just be on holiday! Enjoy your time of leisure. Whether you are with family, a close friend or two, or simply making the most of the time for yourself, we hope you enjoy your holiday!
