With new technology and cultural shifts, home renovation trends come and go. With over 1,000 successful renovations completed, I’ve seen it all – and I have some bold predictions about where home renovations are headed.

In 2025 and beyond, the focus is sustainability. From smart home integrations and eco-friendly materials, the future of renovation will mark a major shift in how we upgrade our living spaces.

Remodeling for the Long Term

Often, homeowners remodel their homes before they sell. However, the housing market often means more people are finding it cost-effective to invest in their current home due to factors like labor costs, material shortages, and mortgage refinancing. Instead of looking to upgrade homes, homeowners are focusing on making their space work for them.

Smart Homes on the Rise

The days of smart technology as a luxury are over. Automated lighting, voice-controlled appliances, and AI-powered energy management are likely to become a staple in most renovation projects. More homeowners are prioritizing convenience and efficiency with systems that learn their habits and adjust accordingly.

AI and Virtual Reality Will Transform Planning

AI-driven design tools and virtual reality walkthroughs are quickly overtaking the standard blueprints and 2D renderings. Homeowners can see and adjust their renovations in real-time before the actual work begins, reducing expensive mistakes and changes while improving overall satisfaction.

Sustainability in Material Choices

Eco-conscious homeowners have been seeking energy-efficient solutions for a while, but the next wave of sustainable renovation will focus on materials. Expect a rise in demand for recycled wood, non-toxic paint, and energy-efficient insulation, as well as modular, pre-fabricated components that reduce waste and speed up construction timelines.

Accent Lighting Everywhere

Adding accent lighting like dimmable wall sconces and picture lights are becoming more popular, especially for DIYers. Cordless lighting fixtures are widely available, allowing homeowners to create layered lighting without extensive – and daunting – electrical work.

Floor Plans Based on Multi-Generational Living

Housing costs are rising, and combined with uncertain economic times, families are choosing to live together longer. Home renovations will likely accommodate this with multi-generational living solutions, such as flexible living spaces, in-law suites, and designs that balance privacy with communal areas.

DIY-Friendly Renovations

DIY renovations have always been popular among homeowners, but the availability of information and tutorials has helped more people access their inner handyman. Homeowners are more likely to use project planners and advanced home improvement tools to tackle their own minor renovations. However, professionals will still play a crucial role in high-end renovations and structural work.

Spa Wet Rooms

As more people work from home, there’s an increased focus on how our home surroundings impact wellbeing. Wet rooms, or shower rooms, are spaces in or near bathrooms where every surface can withstand water. These spa-inspired spaces often feature curbless showers and open spaces that evoke luxurious hotel suite bathrooms for self-care and relaxation.

Discreet Technology Features

Though technology can be helpful in the home, it can disrupt efforts to create old-world charm and character – particularly in historic homes. Well-designed smart homes integrate features seamlessly, camouflaging high-tech features like touch screens, televisions, and kitchen appliances.

Energy-Efficient Fixtures

In 2025, energy efficiency and water conservation are important considerations in kitchen and bathroom remodeling. Homeowners are increasingly choosing fixtures that cut utility costs and support a more sustainable lifestyle, such as low-flow toilets and faucets that perform well while reducing water usage or smart shower systems.

Bold Color Palettes

In recent years, neutral tones were the focus with just a splash of color here and there. Now, homeowners are embracing bold, vibrant color palettes to bring energy and personality into their homes. Deep blues, rich greens, and warm terracotta shades are the prime choices for walls, cabinetry, and kitchen islands, combined with intricate patterns and geometric shapes for backsplashes and sleek metal or glass finishes, turning them into statement spaces.

Niche Kitchen Features

Kitchens are increasingly becoming the center of activity in a home. More homeowners are leaning into this trend, adding features like dedicated coffee bars that attract guests for conversation in one area, out of the way of food prep. Along with this, beverage and wine refrigerators are becoming staples in the kitchen.

Ceiling Treatments as Design Trends

Ceiling treatments are a new design trend that turn boring ceilings into key elements of home design. Ceilings with texture and visual interest elevate the aesthetic and make spaces more inviting with features like coffers, wood paneling, custom moldings, and patterned wallpapers.

Renovation for Resale

The current market is driving a lot of homeowners to embrace home renovations that are functional now and appealing to prospective buyers in the future. There’s a big push for renovations like kitchen upgrades, smart home features, and outdoor renovations that are long-term investments with mass appeal.

Shift to Cozier Spaces

Industrial-looking renovations once dominated home trends, but warm and contrasting colors and materials are the new trend for renovations. The goal with sustainable materials like reclaimed wood, cork, glass, and shelving instead of built-in cabinetry is to create a warmer, more welcoming home.

Multi-Use Spaces

Open floor plans are always divisive, but they’re expected to trend in 2025 and onward – particularly as multi-functional spaces. With the rise in remote work, homeowners are seeking versatile spaces that can be used for living spaces, entertainment, home offices, and gyms. For example, using the space under the stairs for storage or adding a home gym to open garage space can maximize functionality without adding to the footprint.

Outdoor Living Spaces

There’s an increased demand for outdoor living spaces, especially in areas with sunny, warm weather most of the year. Homeowners want to treat their backyard as an extension of their homes with outdoor kitchens, gazebos, pergolas, and landscape and hardscape design that supports outdoor entertainment in any season.

Looking Ahead to Home Renovation Trends

In home renovation, 2025 and beyond highlight trends focused on smart design, sustainability, versatility, and customization. Homeowners are embracing eco-friendly materials, smart upgrades, and functional spaces without sacrificing character and style with bold design choices.
