When it comes to your plumbing, many issues are ones that you can fix on your own. However, there are other situations in which it is simply best to call in a professional. Determining whether the plumbing issue you’re having is a do-it-yourself type of situation or one that requires plumbing services can be a bit tricky. Luckily for you, you don’t have to make this decision on your own. Here are seven different scenarios in which calling in a professional plumber is the right move.

1. A Burst Water Line

Although this does not happen too often, it is not impossible. When your water line bursts, it can cause severe flooding in your home, which is not ideal. Obviously in this instance, your first instinct should be to call the plumber.

While you wait for the plumber to arrive, however, you can attempt to try and find any water supply cut-off valves that can typically be found near the leak. Once you locate the cut-offs, which are typically valves, try to shut them off in order to keep the water from continuing to flood your home.

2. Lack of Water

On the other hand, another instance in which you will want to rely on professional plumbing services would be if you are completely out of water in your home. An important thing to note is that if water stops flowing to one particular part of your home, such as your bathroom, but is still running in the kitchen, chances are something is blocking the sink that isn’t getting water.

However, if your entire home is not getting any water, it could be something much worse, such as a burst water pipe. Either way, you will want to call in a plumber to come and check it out.

3. Drainage Leak

Oftentimes, a drainage leak can be fixed on your own, depending on the situation. If you find that your kitchen or bathroom sink is leaking from the trap that is below your counter, this is something you may be able to fix on your own. In fact, all you need to do is turn off the water and replace your trap. However, if you find that your drainage line is in a hard-to-reach area such as under the floor or behind a wall, you will likely have to call in a plumber.

4. Sewer Line Leak

This is certainly a situation that you do not want to encounter; however, if you do, be sure to call in a plumber immediately. Signs of a sewer line leak include a foul-smelling odour in your yard and around your home, and mushy and murky puddles in your grass. Other signs that your sewer line is leaking can include your toilet filling up when you use the sink or having your bathtub fill with waste water when you flush or run your washing machine. If any of these things happen, call in a plumber as soon as possible.

5. Gas Leak from a Water Heater

Keep in mind that in this type of situation, you will want to call the authorities as soon as possible as a gas leak of any kind can be extremely dangerous. After your home is safe to come back to, a plumber may come in and investigate if the leak is a result of the water heater. If so, they will do everything they can to make sure that the problem is fixed and doesn’t happen again.

6. No Hot Water

There’s nothing worse than getting into the shower expecting a nice, warm stream of water, only to be met with an ice-cold blast of water instead. Unfortunately, it’s a situation that is far too common. If this has happened to you, you certainly need to call in a plumber for help. A plumber can not only figure out what exactly caused the problem, but they can also find a solution for it as well.

The cause can be anything from a tank that isn’t big enough to your pipes not working properly. Whatever the reason, you can rest assured that the issue will be fixed when you call in a plumber.

7. A Steady Leak

This is often referred to as your water “sweating.” This happens when small leaks from your water heater begin to come in from cracks or the piping and cause your floor to get a little damp. Other signs of a leak include rusty spots on your water heater or corrosion on your water heater. If you notice any of these signs, it is important to call in your plumber right away so that you can have your water heater replaced.
