Chests of drawers come in many different styles. Whether you’re choosing a chest of drawers for storing clothing in your bedroom or a unit for storing plates in your dining room, it’s important to take the time to explore your options. Below are just a few chic ideas to pull inspiration from.

Go slim and tall

Most chests of drawers are wide and short allowing the top to be used as a table surface. However, you can also buy slim and talls options (known as ‘tallboys’) which are ideal for taking advantage of vertical space and fitting into narrow spaces. Just be wary that some tallboys may need to be secured to the wall to prevent them falling over.

Make it mirrored

Some chests of drawers have in-built mirrors on top so that they can be used as dressing tables. Others are completely mirrored such as these mirrored chest drawers at CFS. On top of looking glamorous, mirrored furniture can have benefits such as making the room feel bigger and reflecting light to make the room feel brighter.

Try wicker

Wicker chests of drawers can provide a stylish beach house feel, while also providing ventilation to the contents of the drawers. They are an excellent choice in bathrooms for storing towels. Consider pairing wicker chests of drawers with other wicker furniture such as wicker wardrobes or wicker bedside cabinets.

Add wash paint

A paint ‘wash’ involves diluting paint with water. Painting wooden furniture with wash paint can transform the colour while allowing the grain of the wood to still be visible. It can provide a rustic look that can be very charming in period properties and farmhouses. For tips on how to paint wash furniture, check out this Furniture Refreshed guide.

Opt for storage cubes

Say no to traditional drawers and consider embracing storage cubes instead. These slide out like drawers but are cube-shaped, making them narrower but taller than traditional drawers. Cube storage can be used to store all kinds of items from clothes to toys to stationery. Each cube drawer can be labelled to keep it organised. You can even buy different coloured cubes to make your unit stand out.

Preserve some history

Opting for an antique chest of drawers could add some history to your home. Such chests of drawers can look great in period homes, but can be equally great at bringing character to a newer home. When buying antique chests of drawers, make sure to carefully inspect the condition – some old units can have damaged drawers that may easily collapse once you start filling them. Restoring old chests of drawers may be possible, but not everyone will have the patience for it.

Consider a media chest

Media chests of drawers are designed to support a TV on top and often space below for media boxes or DVD players (with holes or no backboard to allow cables to run out of the back). You can buy media chests in various different styles and sizes.
